Fribourg Ecology & Evolution Days 2019: The Temporal Dynamics of Evolution
9-10 September 2019
Venue: University of Fribourg
Workshop in collaboration with the CUSO Doctoral Program in Ecology & Evolution and the University of Fribourg
Organizers: Prof. Thomas Flatt (University of Fribourg), Prof. Daniel Wegmann (University of Fribourg) and Dr. Esra Durmaz (University of Fribourg)
Objectives
The course is aimed at students with a general interest in ecological and evolutionary aspects of species interactions, demography and species distributions relevant both for basic science as well as for applied fields such as pest management and conservation ecology. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their work in a 20 min. talk or as a poster.
The workshop will be structured into different sessions and a final wrap-up composed of a discussion in small groups and a summary by an invited expert.

Content
One-time sampling of natural populations provides only a static view of patterns of genetic variation and the resulting evolutionary dynamics. Allele frequency changes can be highly dynamic even across very short (e.g., seasonal) timescales, and adaptation in natural or laboratory populations can take place very rapidly. Theoretical work also suggests that temporal fluctuations may be an important mechanism by which genetic variation is maintained. However, temporal evolutionary dynamics still remain understudied, and the role of temporally varying (balancing, fluctuating) selection remains largely unclear.
The objective of this 2-day mini-school and symposium is to introduce PhD students in ecology and evolution, through a series of expert talks, to this important subject at the forefront of evolutionary biology and population genetics.
The invited speakers are all internationally renowned leaders in population genomics and evolutionary genetics and have been selected to include both empiricists as well as theoreticians. The experts have been asked to "pitch" their talks at a fairly introductory level and to give an overview of the major key concepts and methods in the field.
