Data management for ecologists and evolutionary biologists
3-4 October 2016
Course in collaboration with the CUSO Doctoral Program in Ecology & Evolution
Organiser: Dominique Roche, University of Neuchâtel
Objectives
To teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain.
Speaker
- Joona Lehtomaki , University of Helsinki, Finland
- Adam Obeng , Columbia University, USA
Content
Researchers are familiar with the process of data collection and analysis but often lack essential data management skills.
Data Carpentry's aim is to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so that they can get more done in less time, and with less pain.
This workshop uses a tabular ecology dataset and teaches data cleaning, management, analysis and visualization using SQL1 and R2.
1SQL is a database computer language designed for the retrieval and management of data in relational database. SQL stands for Structured Query Language.
2R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics
- Data organization in spreadsheets and data cleaning with OpenRefine
- Introduction to R
- Data analysis and visualization in R
- SQL for data management
