Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM)

The second half day (21 or 22 May) is fixed in agreement with Michèle Vlimant.

Objectives

Prepare your own biological material  (insects, plants, fungi, etc.) for observation and learn how to manipulate the scanning electronic microscope (SEM).
The aim is also to provide pictures of the brought organism in order to document your own research.

Content and pre-course assignment

Pre-course assignment :

1st day (full day):

  • Preparation of samples (fixation, desiccation, mounting, metallization)

2nd day (half day):

  • Observation of preparations with the SEM at the CSEM (2 hours / participant)
  • Preparation of a document

Travel expenses: participants of the doctoral program are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train (half-fare card, and 2nd class). Please send the original tickets (no copies, except for the general abonnement)  with the reimbursement form to Christiane Bobillier.  No reimbursement for bus, taxi or car travel expenses will be paid.

Registration

The workshop is for doctoral program participants only.

  • Ph.D.students must bring their own biological material.
  • The workshop is free, but the effective cost is approx. CHF 300.00 per person. Therefore a waiting list will be prepared to ensure that there are no empty seats.
  • For practical reasons, the course is limited to 6 participants.
  • To provide the basis for the organization of the course, participants have to fill in the SEM registration form and send it to Michèle Vlimant (michele.vlimant@unine.ch) after registration (not later than 28 April 2014).
