Biopatinas
Biopatinas - conservation of cultural heritage using microorganisms
Thanks to their metabolic diversity, microorganisms can be considered as mini chemical factories adapted to different chemical contexts. We are studying the potential of this metabolic diversity for the development of novel biotechnological solutions for the preservation of cultural heritage. Our latest project, launched in 2015 and funded by the Foundation for the Promotion of the Conservation of Historical Monuments, aims to provide a new sustainable solution for protecting architectural metals using an ecologically friendly biological treatment. The method is based on the development of an aesthetic and protective biopatina that can be applied for preserving built heritage, in particular outdoor metal monuments and historical landmarks.
